Disability Insurance Companies

Disability insurance policies are provided by a number of different insurance companies. The large employee benefit providers like Prudential Financial and MetLife (Metropolitan Life Insurance Company) offer group disability plans to employers, while smaller, specialized companies like AFLAC Inc. provide personal and supplemental disability insurance policies to individual citizens. Most employees will have little say about the insurance company their employer contracts with, but when buying an individual disability insurance policy, it usually pays to shop around for the best quote.

Larger companies may offer a broader suite of products and may have customized products for high earners and other special circumstances. There may also be discounts available for customers who already have one or more insurance product with that company.

On the other hand, smaller, specialized companies may have more in-depth products because disability insurance is their primary focus. They may also provide more customization options.

When assessing an insurance company that sells any kind of insurance product, an individual should also take into account the financial strength and ratings of the company as well as its size and product offerings. Ratings agencies assess insurance companies with regular analysis and can provide a clue to the long-term stability of a particular insurer.
